After pursuing a Masters in Pharmaceutics and Cosmetic Science, Kayura’s founder, Kanan Patel, was determined to create a line of beauty and holistic wellness products that would meet the needs of all people and their most common skin concerns.
Q:
This is something you really care about – why is hyperpigmentation such a common concern?
A:
Hyperpigmentation truly is an equal-opportunity skin condition. It happens to all skin types – even dark skin. I developed hyperpigmentation after typical teenage acne and I literally tried everything I could to cover and hide them.
Hyperpigmentation can also happen from injuries, certain kinds of medication, during hormonal fluctuations in pregnancy, or just by being active in the sun. You can even get it on the left side of your face (and forearm!) from driving your car. Some people just naturally have a propensity for it if they have freckles. There are a variety of causes, even genetics play a huge role, but there are solutions to treat it.

Q:
What’s going on when hyperpigmentation happens?
A:
When our skin produces excess melanin (the pigment responsible for the tone of our skin) hyperpigmentation occurs. Once melanin is over-produced, it accumulates in certain areas of the cells, causing the skin to darken, often resulting in patches.
It’s also not typically symmetrical, so they can pop up here or there. It’s a totally natural process, but it can really feel like an unwelcome, often stubborn, blemish.
Q:
What makes Bright Aura™ so powerful?
A:
Our scientists developed our powerful phytoblend Bright Aura™ that addresses the root of the issue. We have tyrosinase inhibitors that lighten tone and even out the complexion, potent antioxidants that interfere with melanin production, and compounds that break down the darks spots for more even-looking skintone.
We paired these derma-ingredients with Ayurvedic plant extracts known for their soothing and brightening properties. It’s gentle enough for sensitive skin and in our extensive testing process we have not seen any inflammation or irritation. We use plants like Kamegh Leaf extract, Turmeric Root Extract, and Chebulic Myrobalan Fruit Extract, which while Ayurvedic, are not well known or widely used in Western skin care, and have never been used in this combination before.

Q:
Why not just use acids or retinol?
A:
Some of the acids and retinoids that you usually find in OTC products can be too harsh and cause more harm than good for someone with sensitive skin like me. I’m Indian, I’ve had hyperpigmentation challenges since I was a tween.
Retinol in skincare is often a powerful synthetic derivative of Vitamin A, which the body needs for cell turnover. It is highly effective for skin renewal, but retinol can also burn the skin. Too many people end up damaging their skin barrier by using these kinds of products. I wanted to create a product that would deliver visible results over time with consistent use, treating the problem at a cellular level instead of just superficially.

Q:
What can we all do to have a more vibrant, even complexion and how do we keep it that way?
A:
Use Bright Aura™- Ha! I know but, honestly use as recommended, starting slowly and building up to daily use. Give it time to cumulatively take effect, and then make sure you protect your skin as much as you can from environmental stressors and pollutants.
Brightening products can increase the skin’s photosensitivity so you’re more likely to get a sunburn without protection. So always, always cover up. Put a mineral-based sunscreen like our No Rays, Thanks™ on first thing in the morning daily, wear a hat, and stick to the shade. And drink your water. There is no magic bullet for hyperpigmentation but when you have a scientifically tested product and the right lifestyle practices, over time you’ll slowly get closer to the glowing gorgeous skin you’re looking for!
